Ask the Bride -- Dressing for an Evening Wedding

Question: I will be attending an evening wedding in August. What color and style dress is appropriate for such an occasion? -- Beth (beth@buddha11.eng.sunysb.edu)

Answer: When you are asked to attend an evening wedding, first check the invitation for the words "Black Tie" or "Black Tie Invited." This is the most formal of weddings, and the wedding party will be dressed to the nines, the women in floor length evening or ball gowns with gloves and the men in tuxedos or tails. In this case, you could wear a evening gown or cocktail dress, and your date would dress in equally formal attire (dark suit or tuxedo). For a less formal evening wedding, you could wear a cocktail or tea-length dress, a suit or even a dressy pantsuit, and your date would wear a dark suit.

The most common color for women to wear in the evening is black, but you could wear most any dark or bold color. Most people leave the pastels for morning or daytime weddings.
